Spirit of Flowers Tarot by Lo Scarabeo

The images are delicate, lovely, enchanting. They quietly draw you close. Suddenly, you are struck by the power and strength of each card. Just as the heady perfume of a perfect blossom can transport you back in time to a pleasant memory or to a place of poetic dreaminess, these flower spirits can take you to another realm. Let them help you to divine mysteries and open your mind to beautiful possibilities for the future. By Laura Tuan. Artwork by Antonella Castelli. Published by Lo Scarabeo. ISBN: 0-7387-0411-3.

If you like pretty pictures of children with flowers, chances are you will love Laura Tuan and Antonella Castelli’s Tarot of the Flowers.

The watercolors are beautiful, usually pairing a fairy-child with a specific flower and occasionally another small creature such as a snail or frog. Each card is interpreted both for its “language of flowers” meaning as well as its tarot meaning. These meanings don’t always make sense together. Nor do the interpretations of this particular deck match up with other “Language of Flowers” and tarot sources. That said, multiple interpretations allow for some flexibility in readings, which can be a good thing.

The major arcana maintain traditional tarot symbols (Temperance’s water pitcher and Strength’s overcoming the wild animal, for example.) However, the minor arcana forego the traditional suits and instead are color-coordinated (white flowers for swords, blue flowers for chalices, red flowers for wands, and yellow flowers for pentacles). The notes suggest that these colors further correspond to air, water, fire and earth.

While many of the images are full of vitality and humor, some cards have an uncomfortably staged quality. You get the feel that the artist sat down with photographs of real children and flowers, resized them in her mind, and added imagined flouncy clothes and wings. A few of the fairy’s expressions have that self-conscious “I’m having my picture taken” look that doesn’t translate well into art. Also, a number of the same children seem to appear on different cards with slightly altered features. Is it possible the Six of Pentacles and Eight of Swords feature the same fairy boy? Does the Queen of Pentacles later make an appearance with her buddy in the Five of Cups card? It doesn’t really matter in my appreciation of the deck, but it is a bit odd. And odder still, all the fairy-children are white. Is this some Aryan nation of sprites? Weird.

I must add that I am partial to decks in which each card captures some moment of a story or situation, images charged with narrative. The narrative here could pretty easily be summed up as “Tiny winged children hang around flowers.” But despite its few faults, I like this deck and find it gives interesting readings. Also, the images make me happy and there’s nothing wrong with being happy, now is there?

This is a tarot deck for friends of Flower fairies, flowers and lovers of soft artwork with no gross or cruel cards.
In case you have a little daughter who wants to join in your readings you may also think about offering her this deck as birthday or Xmas gift. No offensive artwork, cards also useful for beginners.

A cute deck in LoScarabeo qualitiy range.
