This year promised to be an important one for China. But with the real estate bubble collapsing, infrastructure investment not generating enough revenues to pay massive debts, and export markets shrinking, 2012 may not be the year that heralds the Chinese Century. Or will it?
Perhaps power and prestige are not measured in concrete, gold and jet fighters, but in something more important. Societies are judged by their ability to hold together despite differences in politics, religion, and other important beliefs. Fair distribution of wealth, transparency in elections, tolerance for personal differences and kindness for the less fortunate are the true hallmarks of a successful society. The Chinese leadership aims for balance and that is good. But the Ying will beget the Yang with or without them. Perhaps it's good time to reflect about balance with the I Ching Dead Moon by Luis Royo?
As we pass the Lunar New Year, may your travels bring you home safely. May your dreams come true. And may you be found even if you are not lost. We look forward to an exciting Year of the Dragon at House of Tarot.
