The Dragons Tarot
By Manfredi Toraldo, Artwork by Severino Baraldi

The Dragons Tarot, published by Lo Scarabeo, is a visually stunning offering from this highly regarded Italian publishing house. Rich Chinese lacquer-red borders frame the deck’s cards creating the feel of an exotic entryway. It is the perfect gateway in which to enter into the intriguing and mythological world of dragons!

Interestingly, dragons are represented in tales that have been passed down by every civilization, and scenes from Chinese, Japanese, Celtic, Norse, African, Greek and Christian stories all find there way into this deck. In the Dragons Tarot, these varied stories are explored within the framework of Tarot. It is this multicultural approach to the deck’s imagery that really sets the Dragons Tarot apart from other dragon-themed Tarot decks. Rather than pictures of dragons simply embellishing rather standard Tarot imagery, here traditional stories of dragons imbue the cards pictorially with rich and multilayered meanings. Dinosaurs, the most similar beings to dragons, effectively make an appearance in this deck, too.

The differences in the way dragons are perceived and depicted in various cultures are cleverly explored throughout the Minor Arcana with a distinct continent selected to represent a single suit. Here we find European dragons representing Swords, Asian Dragons representing Chalices (Cups), South American dragons representing Pentacles, and African Dragons representing the Wands suit.

In many ways this is a charming, and even at times amusing, Tarot deck. That said, some of the card’s images are rather dark, especially those stories drawn from Euro-West cultures where dragons have traditionally been viewed as evil and to be killed. With the latter in mind, I must admit the Lovers card gives me pause. In it, a man is bathing in the blood of a slain dragon in order to make himself invulnerable. It is, most certainly, a rather unusual, somewhat disturbing, image for this card but does manage to depict a relationship of sorts and, perhaps, choices being made.

For the most part though, this deck is delightful as well as insightful. The Fool in the Dragons Tarot is whimsical, carefree, and absolutely perfect. Strength is powerfully depicted with the image of a Celtic dragon residing in the earth’s innermost core holding up, and giving energy to, Stonehenge. Hanged Man features a dragon emblem on a flag hanging outside of a castle. It is an image that perfectly captures the meaning of the card but manages to make me smile every time I look at it!

Severino Baraldi, the artist of the Dragons Tarot, is an amazing colorist. Unfortunately, online images of the deck’s cards simply do not capture the beauty of his color-work here. The cards, which measure 2 1/2” X 4 3/4”, are printed on high quality cardstock and have reversible backs. Six languages are discretely featured on the card faces. The little white booklet included with the deck is written in five languages. It provides an abbreviated overview of dragons from a cultural perspective as well as short card definitions including a keyword or words.

While collectors and dragon enthusiasts will most certainly want to add the Dragons Tarot to their collections, Tarot readers with some level of experience will find it of interest, too. An intuitive deck that is eminently usable, the Dragons Tarot enables readers to consider traditional Tarot imagery in slightly altered and expanded ways while enjoying beautiful artwork and a bit of myth and fantasy in the process.
