Eclectic Tarot by Piatnik

The Eclectic Tarot, as its name implies, combines diverse sources of the Tarot tradition while maintaining traditional Tarot symbology. Despite the incorporation of a variety of design elements, the author's goal has been to clarify the Tarot symbology by drawing analogies among parallel systems of perception.  By Josef Machynka.  Published by Piatnik. The deck includes 78 full-color cards and an instruction booklet in english.

This is a mid-sized deck that should find favor with nearly all readers and collectors. While the deck I reviewed did not have a LWB, it did not matter to me. I fell in love with the artwork. The colors are just the right balance to be bright enough to please but not garish.

This deck contains one of my most favorite renditions of the Hermit. The lantern he carries shines back on to him as well as directly on the path in front of him. I get the idea that this Hermit is about staying in the moment of your learning. He needs to watch where he is going but the focus of the lamp’s intensity is on him as if to say “seek within”.

Death in this deck also appeals to me because the heads at the bottom of the deck are of a peasant and a king. There is a rainbow as well that passes through the skeletal Death. I like the hope of the rainbow coupled with the impartiality of the two heads.

My delight in this deck is unusual for me because this is a deck that only has numeric pips rather than illustrated ones. So instead of a three of cups represented by three graces, I have three cups and I must rely on my memory for the meaning. My preference is pictorial pips. Still this deck stands out because of the use of color.

It is Egyptian in theme and is neither a small (playing card size) nor a large unwieldy size deck. I think even those with small hands will find this deck easy to shuffle and use. I can happily and highly recommend the Eclectic Tarot to a new reader because the symbology on the illustrated cards is very in-depth.
